LEDing the Way - Saving Energy & Cutting Bills for Schools in SE London

Community share offers are most often associated with solar panels on community buildings, especially schools.
At Selce, we will soon be launching our second share offer to focus instead on installing energy efficient, flicker-free LED lighting – and here’s why it’s as important and effective as solar:
LED lighting poses a lower risk than solar because LEDs are much more likely to work unproblematically and they don’t depend on the sun coming out.
Lighting upgrades also pay for themselves faster. Plus, ultimately, older more energy hungry lighting is being phased out – in other words, fitting LED lighting will be something all public buildings including schools have to do at some point, if not right now.
While we will continue to install solar and run solar share offers whenever we can, lighting retrofit is not subject to the complex leasing and permissions process of solar – which have come under increased strain in the past year.
Schools who take part get improved lighting at no upfront cost, and continue to make significant savings on their lighting bills even as they help us pay back the capital cost of the project.
In addition to the carbon and electricity cost savings, due to its flicker-free nature, LED lighting contributes towards an improved general wellbeing of pupils and staff members. Overall, we experience less eye strain and fewer of the migraines that are sometimes attributed to long term exposure to fluorescent lighting.
