Six Low Cost Measures to Save on Energy at Home

With energy prices showing little sign of going down right now, here are six low cost energy saving measures that you can install in the home to lower energy bills, and help you live in comfort:

1: Draught Proofing Strips

These draught proofing strips can go along your windows and doors – adding an extra layer of insulation to that area, reducing heat loss.

Draught proofing strips cost approximately £5 for a roll and can save you approximately £85 per year on your bills.

2: Draught Excluders for Doors

These draught excluders are designed to reduce the amount of cold air entering the home and prevent warm air from leaving,

There can be many cracks and gaps in and around the door, and draught excluders work by sealing these off.

Costs can be as little as £10 for a brush draught excluder, and they can save you approximately £30-£50 per year.

3.Radiator Reflector Panels

Radiator reflector panels can be installed behind any radiator in your home – there are several ways you can install them, such as using tape, check their instructions for more info.

They can be cut and measured to the size of your radiator and should reflect some heat from the radiator lost to walls back into the room, making it feel warmer.

These panels are best used for radiators which are connected to an external wall, as that’s where the most heat loss occurs.

Radiator reflector panels approximately cost £10 and can save approximately £25 per year.

4: Water Saving Shower Head

Water saving shower heads help you reduce your water use while still providing an adequate shower with no loss of water pressure

There are 3 types of water saving shower heads:

💡 Aerating shower heads mix air with water to create a mist-like spray.

💡 Laminar flow shower heads deliver individual streams of water without mixing them with air.

💡 Low-flow shower heads restrict the flow of water while maintaining adequate pressure.

On average, these shower heads can cost £13 and can save you approximately £25 per year.

5: Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers can help remove excess moisture from the air and turns this into a liquid which it stores, and you empty out from time to time.

There are two types: you can pick up disposable interior dehumidifiers for as low as £2, and they can help reduce future costs in your home by reducing the risk of damp, mould, and condensation occurring in the home.

Many dehumidifiers are electric, and whilst the benefits are similar to a disposable one, they are much more effective. These dehumidifiers cost from £50-£200.

6: LED Lightbulbs

Replacing some older lightbulbs like halogen bulbs with LED lightbulbs can help you save a lot of energy – saving at least 75% on average for usage, and lasting up to 25 times longer. They are more efficient as they convert more energy into light and waste less as heat.

LED light bulbs usually cost approximately £5 per bulb and can save you £4-£15 per bulb per year depending on the type you buy.

If you are replacing multiple bulbs, the saving also multiplies – also factor into cost the fact that LED bulbs will need to be replaced a lot less than halogen bulbs and the like.

All of these measures should not only help to lower your energy bills, but importantly also increase your comfort levels and make your house warmer this winter.
