We can offer FREE help to anyone living in South London who

  • has low income and high energy costs
  • is over 60
  • has a long term health condition or disability

Our friendly team can make your home warmer, saving you money and improving your health. They will:

  • Explain how to make your home more energy efficient
  • Install energy saving devices
  • Offer impartial advice on how to pay less for your electricity or gas
  • Give you energy debt advice
  • Help you to grant grants for home energy improvement

Grants for Home Energy Improvements

During the home visit, our team will assess whether you can benefit from a grant towards the cost of home energy improvements such as:

  • Loft insulation
  • Wall insulation
  • Boiler replacement
  • First-time central heating

The funding for home energy improvements comes from large energy suppliers such as British Gas who have an obligation towards helping lower-income households install home energy improvements to make their homes warmer and more energy-efficient, thus lowering their energy bills.

Both homeowners and tenants living in private rental accommodation can apply. If you are a tenant, you will need the permission of your landlord. If you are a landlord applying on behalf of your tenants, you’ll need their consent.

Sadly, if you live in social housing you are not eligible for grants for home energy improvements

You may be eligible for a grant towards home energy improvements if your household has a below-average income/receive income-related benefits

and one of the following

  • High energy costs (more than 10% of income)
  • Your household has a vulnerable member eg. a person over 70, or a child under 5, or a pregnant woman, or someone with a disability/long term health problems
  • You use a pre-payment meter
  • Have broken or electric heating

What does an assessment involve?

We’ll arrange a time for one of the ECO Project team to visit you at home and work out whether you are eligible for home energy improvements for free. The visit should take less than one hour and we usually do visits on Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays and Fridays.

Who pays for the measures?

The measures are paid for through the ECO Scheme (Energy Companies Obligation). ECO is a government-led energy efficiency programme funded by energy suppliers. It aims to reduce the amount of wasted energy from homes and help people to keep warm and well in winter.

Who is eligible?

The scheme aims to help anyone living in their own homes or renting privately and needs help. You qualify if you live in a below average income household and you have either high energy costs or a household member with pre-existing health conditions.

What if I rent my home from a private landlord?

You can still apply for measures. You will just need the permission of your landlord to go ahead with installing the improvements we identify.

Can landlords apply?

Landlords can apply for home energy improvements for a property provided their tenants are eligible and give their permission.

What’s the benefit of cavity wall insulation?

Around a third of all heat lost in an uninsulated home goes through the walls. Heat flows from a warm area to a cold one. In winter, the colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home escapes into the surrounding air. Essentially, you’re paying good money to heat the outside air.

If your home was built after 1920, the chances are its external walls are made of two layers with a gap or cavity between them. Cavity wall insulation fills that gap, keeping the warmth in. This saves energy as well as helping to reduce condensation inside the house. It could save you up to £227* per year.

What’s the benefit of loft insulation?

In a poorly insulated home, up to a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is a simple and effective way to keep in heat. Plus you could save up to £150* per year. Many lofts are already insulated but could benefit from a top-up of insulation

Can you help with heating?

According to the Energy Saving Trust, boilers account for 55% of domestic energy use. By replacing your old gas boiler with new high efficiency, A-rated condensing boiler you’ll cut your energy bills by as much as £300 per year.

If your boiler is working well, there’s no need to replace it. However, if you have an old, inefficient or broken boiler, or you currently have no central heating – gas-fired or otherwise – you may be eligible for a replacement or installation of a new system.
